THE NIGHT (2)

(If you're looking for part one, it's here)

I like the night.

Cooler breezes
wend their ways through
open apartment windows.
They make a cool room
in which I can sleep with
wool blanket or
feather duvet, if
I need it.
The contrast of warm and cool
soothes my soul
comforts my body,
readies me for
a good night's sleep

I like the night.
In our darkened apartment
the everyday demands
of preparing meals,
and doing dishes,
and keeping things tidy,
and conversation,
and writing and reading,
are set aside.
Instead, night invites
quietness and restfulness —
or, if not deep restfulness,
at least some relaxation,
and some time for reflection —
not as easily done
in the garish sun.

  1. You are a bear, for talking trash about the sun. Garish, eh?
    But I do understand, indeed.
Since moving up here, I wear hats and shades to protect my eyes and skin from the garish sun when it deigns to show up.

Your poems are gentle reminders of what's really important, Bear.

    1. To wax eloquent for a moment:

That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
~ Romeo and Juliet; III, 2

The line was used to the Turner movie Gettysburg, by an an individual in the movie who played the part of an actor turned Confederate spy.

Yes, I know; Bear recalls strange things.

Please do take care of your eyes and skin.

      Blessings and Bear hugs!

  2. I like night, too. The quiet and the darkness, and lately, the pleasant, cool weather. I don't like it as much when I have to turn on the AC and I'm trapped inside by the heat and the mosquitoes.

    Love,
    Janie

THAT'S IT! I have been returning to read your poem since yesterday and it was driving me a bit nuts not being able to place the "garish sun" part.WHew! Thanks for straightening that out.In the future I should read the comments sooner.

  5. This sounds like where I live. It's so hot during the day, but cool at night, and always with a breeze. Love that time right before bed. :)

    1. It usually works that way here, Kristen. But some nights there is no breeze. That's when the air conditioning is particularly helpful.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem, Buttons. It's very kind of you to call me talented; I tend to think of myself in more pedestrian terms.

    1. No, it was Bill Shakespeare who go th garish sun. I'm just quoting him. But it gets hot enough around here sometimes, that the sun could be describe as garish.
